What is macro nutrition coaching?
O
nline macro coaching is a strategic approach to nutrition that focuses on the three primary macronutrients: proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. This method differs from generic meal plans or diets. Macro coaching is personalized nutrition for your unique body composition, lifestyle, and goals, whether you’re looking for fat loss, muscle gain, or improved athletic performance. From a long term perspective, learning about macros is key for you to have a greater understanding about nutrition so you can develop simple, healthy, and sustainable habits. It will afford you a flexible approach, which in real life is what leads to a healthy relationship with food.
Who is macro nutrition coaching for and why should you consider it?
Macro coaching is ideal for anyone seeking to break free from the cycle of restrictive diets and embrace a more personalized approach to health. Whether you’re an athlete with specific performance goals or someone simply looking to make sustainable lifestyle changes, I can coach you to your goals. We’ll focus on building sustainable habits, fostering motivation and the drive required for long-lasting positive changes in your fitness journey.
Macro coaching is great for those seeking a more structured and data-driven approach to diet and nutrition.
Overall, I’ve found it to be a key driver for teaching. Everyone is different, some of my clients love tracking and measuring things, others find it to be a nuisance. If you fit the latter category, no worries we will use it for a short period of time to get a sense of your palate and to help you determine what and how much you are taking in as we are all bad estimators.
My areas of expertise are broad and include weight loss with accountability, muscle building, strength training, conditioning, sports nutrition, macro coaching, nutrition consulting, and habit change. With a passion for guiding clients through positive changes in a sustainable way and staying abreast of the latest research and methodologies, I am equipped to accompany you on your health and wellness journey.

“I cannot say enough great things about John Brooks and Nutrition 361. I came into this program with a defeated mentality. I have been training on my own for the past few years and got weight down to a respectable amount. I then plateaued hard. I knew I needed a change in my workout regime and eating habits. Then I contacted John. He opened my eyes to a world of eating that was never really apparent to me from reading popular books by accredited trainers, blogs, Pinterest etc. Concepts of food that seem simple enough were explained by John in a way that just made sense. He takes a scientific approach to his teaching and the evolution of concepts of the human body to explain why and how eating the right nutrition is so important. And for a science nerd like myself I ate it all up (pun intended). The workouts are fantastic. Even after a few months of doing this journey with John, I find that after we switch to another workout, I will be sore in areas that I never imagined. The workouts keep you engaged the entire time and are so manageable to complete because they are 30-45mns a day. Even if you don’t have a gym membership, these workouts can be done at home with basic equipment. John is so responsive to tailoring my workouts to fit my needs. Like I said, google doesn’t allow ENOUGH space to write all the good things I have to say but the most endearing part of all this is the support John gives. I am no stranger to self-deprecating and after talking with John I feel like I can move mountains. His teaching is great, his workouts work but I think what makes this program so successful is the attitude that comes with it as a coach. He is absolutely incredible and wants nothing but to see his clients succeed. He gives me the power to hold myself to a higher standard to be healthy for me and my family. So if you’re on the fence about going all in with this program, sign up for a consultation-you will be hooked!”

“Nutrition 361 has really made a HUGE impact on my health and wellness! John is the real deal! He has been such a patient and inspirational coach, basically walking me through changes that I need to make to my eating and activity level to better my mental and physical state. He is pretty much always available to answer questions and provide guidance when I’m unsure about something. He’s been able to educate me on living a healthy lifestyle without feeling like I am missing out on anything. I had lost hope when fad diets and random workouts weren’t getting me to the weight and look I wanted for myself, and then I started to work with John. Without him, I couldn’t have gotten to where I am today. Thanks John! You’re the BEST!”

Through guidance, he cleared these misunderstandings and embraced a more adaptable approach to eating, focusing on nutrient-rich foods. This change perfectly aligned with a well-structured training regimen, which balanced volume, strength, and cardiovascular exercises. As a result, he achieved a remarkable improvement in his overall health and fitness.
“In an industry that is saturated with people selling false nutrition information, contradictory ideologies and just plain old money making schemes, John is the complete opposite of all that. His knowledge of food, dieting, workouts, how the body works and the science behind it all is truly second to none. He has de-bunked numerous health and diet “truths” that I have always known to be gold standards and consistently backs them up with fact based scientific explanations. Anyone interested in finally cutting out all the BS and getting into serious shape and conditioning, look no further cause John is your man!!”Joseph K.
Benefits of online macro coaching and how to choose the best coach for you
Macro Nutrition Coaching FAQ
Q: I’ve struggled with tracking in the past, do I need to track for macro coaching to be effective?
A: Tracking is by no means a life sentence when it comes to macro coaching and it can take many forms. Initially, it’s helpful to understand intake, then becomes optional. Also, tracking should not be an attempt at perfection as it will cause undue anxiety, and it’s unnecessary. For my clients, we simplify things. For instance, you can track only protein if it has been a problem in the past or only on the weekends as that’s where you’ve deviated in the past. The ultimate goal is for you to learn about macros so you become a mindful eater in the long-term where tracking isn’t necessary.
Q: What about alcohol? Does it have calories?
A: Yes, alcohol has 7 calories per gram. Alcohol, like many things is dose dependent. The more you research it, the more you realize less is better than more and none is ideal. That stated, I’ve had many clients who enjoy a few drinks over the weekend and it has not gotten in the way of achieving their goals.
Q: Is counting macros the same as IIYFM (If It Fits Your Macros)?
A: Not for me and my clients. We focus on various targets, including vegetable intake, fruit intake, and other nutrient dense foods. While it’s true you can only focus on macros and achieve short-term body composition based goals, our focus is also long-term health so you not only achieve the physique you desire, but also improve gut health, mental health, etc. Also, behaviors matter. For instance, redefining the meaning full where you stop at 80% of what you typically eat and wait 10 minutes to assess how you feel.
Q: Is tracking time consuming?
A: No, within a few days you should not be spending more 10 minutes per day tracking.
Q: Do I need to weigh my food?
A: No, most foods have the info on packaging to make it simple. You can scan bar codes. Also, we have tricks where you can use your hands to estimate. If someone is struggling I have them send me food pics to see if it matches the amounts they are tracking. Overall, you can of course use a food scale for some energy dense foods, however it is not a deal breaker.
Q: Do you share recipes, help with grocery lists, and meal prep planning as part of your coaching programs?
A: Yes to all of the above. Rather than hand my clients a meal plan, I get know their palate. Meal plans are not the long-term best way for real life as you are boxed in and eating based on someone else’s palate. Rather, I see what you are currently doing and we make changes that you will be able to sustain for the foreseeable future. In my experience, most people have some positive habits that we can build upon based on their individual needs. For example, sometimes you need to eat fast food, the good news is your hard work doesn’t go out the window, check out my article on macro friendly fast food options.

One-on-one services give you varying levels of access to John for support via in-person (depending upon location), phone calls, screen shares, e-mail and text messaging.
One-time services are customized services with an initial call and screen share to review the plan and apps. These services are also available on an on-going basis where macro nutrient levels, training programs etc. are updated monthly.
Group training is a service where one gets access to the training app and a training program for those with limited equipment available. Most of these exercises are body-weight, resistance bands, and a kettlebell or dumbbell. There is a supportive community and John will give feedback in the group chat.
Yes. If you need more 1-on-1 attention you can switch at any time.
No. The consultation call is 100% obligation free. My goal isn’t to sell you a plan as the best relationships are 100% voluntary. I never want a client to feel like they’ve been sold and have buyer’s remorse. In addition to discussing your goals, the call is to determine if I can help you achieve your goals and if you’re ready for change. This is why I don’t have a direct payment link on my site. I want to ensure I am the right coach for you and you’re ready for change.
Yes! This is actually common. Many clients start with a premium plan for the first 1-3 months then transition to a lite coaching program. Once you have a better grasp of things one call per month with email support is plenty.
No. Meal plans can be bought anywhere and in my experience are not long term solutions.
I will teach you how to eat based on your preferences, goals, and what you can adhere to.
When you learn and understand the how, what, and why about nutrition you’ll have the tools to make your own decisions instead of being stuck with a meal plan.
I do help with food decisions, recipes, and meals as I get to know you and your palate.
Yes. I spent over 10 years in the supplement industry and I’m always up to date on the latest evidence. My clients save an enormous amount of money as a result of my advice.
I do not dismiss all supplements out of hand as that is a lazy critique. Rather, I only recommend supplements with evidence demonstrating their effectiveness and safety.
I’ve worked with individuals from various backgrounds both men and women, from elite athletes to busy adults balancing work and family. I truly enjoy the variety.
I will challenge you to be better in a manner that is sustainable. I meet you where you’re at and we go from there in finding your best self. If you’re not ready for change I’d advise not signing up with me. If you’re let’s get started!
